Okay so I've been a little obsessed with romance movies and novels lately. Not that I'm comparing any of the heroes to Andrew. He did mention last night that he didn't want me to read/watch any more of these movies/books because he feared I would start expecting him to act just as the men do in the stories. It's okay Andrew, I don't expect you to be as obsessed as Heathcliff or as stupid as Edmond Bertram.
So the first I watched was Wuthering Heights. I had seen the first of the two part film on Masterpiece Theatre but had missed the second half. So I now have watched both together and have to admit that I'm a fan. The story however, kind of depressing. I've seen another version but I liked the actors and actresses in this one a little better.
The second, Mansfield Park. My mom had told me that she didn't like it so much but I decided to watch it to form my own opinion. I would have to agree with her, I would make this my least favorite of Jane Austen's stories. Weak hero and a little "too much info", in some parts.
The third, Northanger Abbey. I liked this one though I had to keep rewinding it because the girls were a little crazy and I was missing parts. I'll probably have to watch it again. It was cute and more lighthearted than I expected. I liked the actors and actresses. The main girl (above) pretty cute but I wonder how old she is because she looks like she's 15.
The Girl With the Pearl Earring. I know it didn't quite fit in with the rest but it has Colin Firth so that's good enough. I actually liked it despite the disturbing husband who was obsessed with painting and a beautiful face. I would just say that it could have been a lot worse.
And for my favorite of the bunch, Emma. Yes, little did you know that there was a new Emma. It is four hours long. So for those of you who enjoy a good LONG version of your favorite story, this is it. I really enjoyed it, I can't really compare it to the Gweneth Paltrow, Emma because of the length and depth of the story. I liked it a lot. It had a lot of BEAUTIFUL scenes, dresses and furniture, yes furniture. It does play on PBS the end of January and into Feb. You may be wondering how I saw it already..... um... let's just say that I have a very computer savvy husband.
Oh and of course I've been reading another Georgette Heyer book, Friday's Child. It's becoming one of my favorites of hers. I love the plot of having the hero and heroine (Hero :)) married at the beginning of the book and having them (him) fall in love while married. Oh and who could forget all of those friends of Sherry's? I just read the part about the duel. Hilarious! I laughed so hard Andrew woke up and demanded to know what was so funny. I told him and he was like, "Oh.... yeah... that was funny..." then he went back to sleep. Oh well, Georgette Heyer didn't write the books for men. Just for a silly girl's entertainment.

You are certainly right about Georgette not writing her books for men. I could no more see Maurie reading and enjoying a Georgette Heyer book than I could see myself fly. I think that after the high activities of the holidays and the stress we put ourselves under trying to get everything done and just right that we need to relax a little and read excellent books. Friday's Child certainly falls into that category. Enjoy.
