Interesting Week

Well, the week started off well. We didn't have school on Monday because of Civil Rights day and then I had a teacher work day on Tuesday. I love teacher work days because I can get so much done and there are no students. I can get things on my own pace. But it was back to school on Wednesday. Thursday was also a normal day.... but Friday? Not so normal. I arrived at school at around 7:30 after I had dropped Andrew off at Trax. I had a student waiting for me, wanting to take a test. He started the test and about 10 minutes later, the fire alarm goes off. I looked at him and he looked at me like, "Um... Are we supposed to do anything?" and I was going to ignore it because I thought that it was a mistake. I waited to hear an administrator over the intercom telling us to ignore it but, no one did. So I peeked outside into the halls and noticed teachers hauling their few students out of the building. So I grabbed my coat and classroom keys, gave Mason a clipboard and said, "Well, let's go". I didn't think we would be out there very long so I told him to continue taking his test. I know... but I really wanted him to take it before the weekend so we went out and met the other teachers and students on the South side of the building. As we were heading out I did notice quite a few cop cars so I figured it was something a little more serious than I had first thought. Mason finished his test and then I told him he could go. I didn't really have to keep track of him considering class hadn't officially started. So we, some other teachers and I, were sitting their talking and then they announced over the intercom that if anyone was cold they could go to the seminary building. So we told the students to go and hang out there until further notice and we continued talking. Then another teacher came by and told us it was going to at least be an hour before we were to be let back in the school. I figured I had better go check on the Kinderbeets and see how Leah was doing out in the cold. So we started heading back around to the North side of the building but soon found out that all of the kids had been taken to the seminary building to stay warm. So we headed there and the building was packed full of students and teachers. It took me a while to finally find the Kinderbeets but they were in a room and there were a bunch of the girls that take the class in there helping out with all of the hungry kids. They were all hungry because they were about to serve the kids their breakfast when the alarm went off, so the kids were not happy, especially Leah. Fortunately, a teacher who wasn't even affiliated with Kinderbeets offered to go to the store and pick up some things for the kids to tide them over until we could go back in the school. She came back with a bunch of fruit, cookies, graham crackers, juice and milk. Even some formula and bottles for the infants. How sweet is that? It was fortunate that she was actually able to leave because soon after she got back the police cars had blocked off all of the entrances to the school parking lot.

So... you are probably wondering why we were all sent out of the school. Well.... some kid decided it would be funny or entertaining to call in a bomb threat to the school. So dogs were sent in to search the building, they somehow got a lead that the "bomb" was in the boys locker room so they had to cut off all of the locks off of the lockers. That was taking a while and they also got a lead that the "bomb" was supposed to go off at 12 noon. We were hearing all of this by way of cell phone, or a messenger that would periodically run to the police and ask what the heck was going on. We couldn't watch the news or anything so we were pretty much in the dark besides rumors from texts and calls from outsiders. It was CRAZY! The place was packed and though the students could have been complete hellions, they were not. They were very well behaved and just sat around and watched movies, played games or chatted in the 15 rooms of the seminary building. It was quite the experience. Leah wasn't happy the whole time but we finally got her to sleep for her midmorning nap and then we just waited. We waited for about three hours and then finally were admitted back to the school. We were questioning beforehand if we would even have school, but the alternative was to call off school and then have to make up the hours on President's Day. I was not happy with that, considering I already had plans, so I was pretty anxious to get back to class. When we did, I had less than half of the students show up. Big Surprise! but we ended up just playing games and talking. The class periods were only about a half an hour long and we even got an hour lunch out of it. So... needless to say that was quite the interesting morning for Leah and me. I am just glad that it was a threat and not the real thing.

If you want to read the ksl.com story and watch the video clip go to this link. Most of the students in the clip I now have as students or had them in the past. That was kind of interesting. They exaggerate a few things, like students were out in the cold for hours.... yeah not so much. Oh well provides for a little excitement for the valley. Anyways here is the link

Later that night we went to the University of Utah gymnastics meet against the Washington State Huskies. Despite the bad fog we made it there and enjoyed a good meet where we came out on top against the Huskies. It was fun to go and may have to go again since they are ranked 3rd in the nation.
Besides all of that later in the week, earlier in the week was spent doing fun things like dressing up Leah and doing her hair.
This is the dress that her Great-Grandma Baum gave her for Christmas, it is very wintery and fluffy. She looks cute, sorry her hair isn't done yet in this picture.

And here she is sporting a more funky look with the pigtails and pink corduroy dress and fashion, forward boots.

Pointing at a button.
On Monday I decided to try a little do on Leah. I think it worked out quite well. I had to use a lot of gel but I'm excited for the fact that her hair is long enough to do this. I think the little curls in back are darling.

I have also been feeling very crafty lately and went to the Dollar Days at Michael's and bought a few odds and ends to use to make Leah some hair clips. I had previously made some for her but I wanted to try some new things and new colors. I bought the crochet yarn to make cute little flowers for clips.

Here is my attempt. I think it turned out really cute. I love these two colors together. Now, I didn't make up the pattern myself. I got it from this website here.

Crocheted flowers

As for the middle part on my flower, I did make that up. I would tell you how but I don't remember. I just played with it and filled in the holes. She wore it yesterday in her hair with her colorful green vest and pink shirt. It was darling. Sorry no pictures.

Well there you have it, a very interesting week. Packed and interesting, much more of this and I'm going to have this baby earlier than Leah!!

Wow! I bet that was kind of scary with the bomb threat! I can't believe you made your student finish his test in the cold (meanie!). Just kidding. Thanks goodness for Seminary buildings huh? ;)

That's exactly what I thought when you told me you made your student keep taking his test. He should get extra points for taking his test under a lot of stress and not good conditions. I do love the hair do. I'm so glad she has enough hair that you can invent some different ways. BTW, I used to do the same hairdo on you. Love the pretty wintery dress. She's looking very thin. Is she eating enough?
